Intel oneAPI Video Processing Library (oneVPL) by Intel Corporation is a cross-architecture, hardware-accelerated API for building high-performance video encode, decode, and processing pipelines. It provides a single, portable C API and a runtime dispatcher that selects the best available implementation on the system—spanning Intel GPUs, CPUs, and other accelerators—so your application can scale across devices without code changes. As the successor to Intel Media SDK, oneVPL supports modern codecs and a broad set of video processing primitives, enabling low-latency, power‑efficient media workflows on Windows and Linux.

Highlights:

  • Unified API for video encode, decode, and processing (VPP) with asynchronous pipelines
  • Hardware acceleration where available, with optimized CPU fallback for portability
  • Support for popular codecs (hardware support varies by platform), including AV1, HEVC/H.265, AVC/H.264, VP9, and MPEG‑2
  • Video processing operations such as color space conversion, scaling, frame rate conversion, deinterlacing, and denoising
  • Zero‑copy and efficient memory management with surfaces for high throughput and low latency
  • Cross‑platform backends (for example, Level Zero, D3D11, VA‑API) selected automatically at runtime
  • Samples, tutorials, and open-source components to speed up development
  • Integrates with common media toolchains and frameworks, helping accelerate transcode, streaming, conferencing, and video analytics workloads

Availability:

  • Platforms: Windows and Linux
  • Distribution: Included in the Intel oneAPI Base Toolkit and available as open-source components (dispatcher, samples) to ease adoption and integration

Use it to build portable, performant media applications that automatically take advantage of the best acceleration available on each system.
